Despite America’s anti-aging obsession and numerous medical advances, life spans are actually shortening for the first time in recorded history … largely because of what people eat.

Fortunately, fast-growing evidence shows the extraordinary power of good culinary choices.

Taking this science into the kitchen, wellness authority Rebecca Katz, M.S.,  shows that deliciously healthful foods can promote a long and healthy life.

Readers of Vital Choices – and folks who’ve visited our Cooking Videos page – will be familiar with Chef Katz.

Now, Rebecca has shifted her focus from foods to prevent cancer to food as the fundamental foundation of a longer, healthier lifespan.

Her latest cookbook, The Longevity Kitchen, features 125 delicious recipes (many of which are beautifully illustrated to boot) – preceded by 50 pages on diet and health.

In The Longevity Kitchen – which features a forward by Andrew Weil, M.D. – she presents delicious ways to use food to boost the performance of every key body system.

Rebecca explains the benefits of each main ingredient, includes menu plans to address specific symptoms, and provides detailed nutritional information for each recipe.

Crucially, Rebecca understands and harnesses what she calls the “power of yum” – and proves that great taste and great nutrition can joyfully coexist on the plate.

Book focuses on top 16 longevity foods
Katz and co-author Matt Edelson draw on the latest scientific research to explain how select foods – such as wild salmon, asparagus, basil, coffee, dark chocolate, kale, and extra virgin olive oil – can build immunity, heart and brain health, and reduce your risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Each of her “top 16” foods helps combat and prevent common health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammation, dementia, and arthritis.

And more of her recipe ingredients are listed in the Culinary Pharmacy … a special section that shares how specific ingredients supercharge one’s health and promote a long life of wellness.

Tapping into time-tested cooking wisdom from noted longevity hotspots – including Okinawa, Greece, and Costa Rica – Rebecca’s book shows how cuisines particular to each region lengthen lives.

Her recipes are categorized according to their special benefit as immune boosters, stress reducers, mind enhancers, blood sugar regulators, flexibility promoters, liver boosters, heart strengtheners, and skin en-richening aids.

Rebecca’s culinary skills transform these ingredients into wonderful meals that delight the palate and nourish the body.

The Vital Choice connection
She spoke with Vital Choice founder Randy Hartnell about selecting fish, and includes his advice in the chapter on Protein-Building Foods, which features recipes for top Vital Choice products: wild salmon, smoked wild salmon, sardines, halibut, sablefish (black cod), shrimp (or spot prawns), and scallops.

As Rebecca wrote, “Alaskan fisherman and owner of Vital Choice, a purveyor of wild seafood, says that it’s best to buy fillets of wild tuna and halibut cut from smaller fish (twenty lbs. or less for tuna; 40 lbs. or less for tuna). These fish are younger and, according to Hartnell, “have the highest levels of omega-3s and the lowest levels of contaminants.”
